Afzal was born in New Delhi, India on the 22nd of September 1972.
His father, Mosie Moolla was the Chief-Representative of the ANC in India, Egypt, and served as ANC Secretary at the World Peace Council in Helsinki, before returning home in 1990, following the unbanning of the ANC and other political parties, and the release of political prisoners.
Afzal grew up in Egypt, India and Finland where his parents worked full-time for the ANC in exile. He is an avid reader of history and literature from the African continent and has been inspired to write poetry by the great Poets across the world such as Amilcar Cabral, Agostinho Neto, the songs of Vuyisile Mini, the words of Steve Biko, Pablo Neruda, the poetry of the former Poet Laureate of South Africa Keorapetse William Kgositsile, and the current Poet Laureate, Professor Mongane Wally Serote, to name just a few.
His debut book of prose and poetry “Struggle, Exile and Love”, with a humbling foreword by South African National Poet Laureate Professor Mongane Wally Serote, was published by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation in 2020.
Afzal works and lives in Johannesburg.
